I’m not even going to go into the fact year 2’s should not have to take exams at ages 6 and 7 but just know before you read any further, I too am very much against it!
However whether we as parents are against it or not, the government and headteachers insist that schools do them so
Here are some of my tips that will hopefully help relieve some of the stress or pressure put on children of such a young age in
Year 2 SATs support
My son did his SATs last year. He was one that was not fazed whatsoever having to do a ‘test’ and quite enjoyed it, to be honest, however not all children are like that.
I think one thing that helped him massively was that his teachers at school ensured that it was all quite ‘normal’.
Secret Agent Training (SATs)
The teachers had been bringing in mock ‘papers’ for months before in a very natural non-examination style and made it so the children thought they were preparing for working towards a Secret Agent Training (SATs).
The mock ‘exams’ were treated as quizzes. There was no unnecessary pressure put on my little one or anyone else within the classroom and it was seen as being completely for fun.
Another way to make sure my son didn’t feel under pressure for the SATs was to ensure we didn’t discuss it at home. Nor did we ever share our own thoughts on the fact he was required to do an exam as young as he was (which was both our thoughts and still is!)
Year 6 primary school exams
I can’t comment on how they are preparing year 6’s for their SATs but only this morning I noticed that our school had put on a special breakfast for those in Year 6 which I thought was a nice touch. Food makes everyone feel better right?!
How did you or are you preparing your children for exams or the SATs in particular or if your children are not yet required to take SATs then why not pin for later!
