The no spend challenge is a great way to save money and learn how to avoid impulse purchases and during this time, you’ll come to discover that there are tons of ways to entertain yourself for free!

But what do you do if you find that you need something or if something you own breaks? It’s tempting to simply replace it with a new one or pay someone to repair it but in the spirit of your commitment to not spend money, there are some alternatives you can try. Check out these creative ways to get what you need for free during your no spend challenge.

Don’t Go Without during A No Spend Challenge!

Check Online Resources or Groups

When you’re in need of something, there are several places you can turn to online. Local Facebook groups are the main one I would suggest heading first as people sometimes give away items for free there. You may just have to pick it up yourself. Car boots or Gumtree is another place where things are offered for free too!

Barter Services or Goods

Bartering is something to consider. I don’t like bartering especially when it comes to services but if you have some things you aren’t using, you could offer them in exchange for the item you do need. The sources listed above are good places to look for those who might wish to barter because they want rid of something they’ve had for many years just collecting dust or you could check with your friends. You could even just ask your social media networks.. it’s likely someone will be able to help you.

Borrow What You Need

Along these same lines, you could always ask your trusted network if you could borrow the item you need for a short while. We share a drill between family members for example when we need it we just go pick it up from whoever has it. This might get you through if you only need something on a temporary basis. You might even be able to hold onto the item for the length of your challenge, depending on how much longer you have.

Repair When Possible

Sometimes fixing things is easier than it may seem, even if you’re not mechanically-inclined look for an online tutorial on a blog or a YouTube video that can show you how to repair an item. Google can be a life saver!

Skill Swap

Can you offer to do something for someone in exchange for them doing something for you?

Offering to after the kids for a night will certainly entice your plumber friend to pop around one Sunday afternoon I’m sure!

These are some of the more common ways you can get what you need without spending a dime during your no-spend challenge. Give them a try in order to stay on track with your progress and if you can think of any more let me know! Feel free to PIN to read again later!

About

I’m Kirsty.  A mother of two (three if you include the hubby!) and I created this blog back in 2016 as a way to make myself accountable for the savings I had to make myself to my day to life after reducing my hours at work.

Childcare costs would’ve meant I was pretty much working for nothing and we refused to pay it!

It is now my mission to help other Mum’s find ways of doing the same & show that you can live within your means without feeling deprived.  The blog will provide you with ways you can make some extra money online, share frugal living tips you can take away and use yourself and encourage you to manage your money correctly!

Luxury doesn’t have to mean buying a Chanel bag or having a Ferrari on your drive but if you budget well, watch your spends, make the right decisions then you just never know… by cutting down or saving on just one element from your life may open other doors to things that you’ve only ever dreamt about!
