We are just back from spending another long weekend in May at the Rhinos Challenge held yearly at Butlin’s Skegness Resort.
Butlin’s holiday review

If you’ve followed the blog for a while you will know last years trip and our first ever Butlin’s Skegness experience as a family was very disappointing, to say the least. So much so we weren’t actually sure whether or not we should head back or not.
We did though and although this year’s trip ended up costing us a lot more than last years, by choice, it was ten times better than our first trip. On one hand, it showed that ‘cheap isn’t always best’ but I still believe even with the amount we did pay last year (which was still a lot of money and not ‘cheap’ in the slightest) we had every right to be disappointed. It was either the cheap Butlin’s holiday we thought it would be!
Butlin’s Silver room
Last years room reservation was a Silver room. Not the most basic but the second one up from the cheapest. I wasn’t expecting the world but I was expecting it to be better than it was.
Butlin’s Seaside Apartment
This year we decided to book a Butlin’s Seaside Apartment. Totally at the opposite end of the accommodation scale as far as the standard rooms are concerned. It had a balcony, two separate bedrooms, a living area, and a kitchenette.

It also cost approx £200 more than the silver room we booked last year but we figured with the kitchenette we would save money eating out and eat in instead.
That didn’t happen as we planned due to the timings of the rugby games over the weekend but the fact we had the kitchenette and particularly the fridge allowed us to have freshly made picnics each day which was very handy.

We did have an issue with the bed (it was like sleeping on empty tin cans but we reported it to guest services) but there was nothing we could really fault with the apartment itself. We were close to both the beach and the Pavilion and although the balconies encouraged people congregating in an evening, having barbeques and the like.. it was a nice area to be in with a small playground located around the back of the apartment that the kids could just go off and play on.

What else did we do different this year?
Besides upgrading the accommodation we also purchased the Premium Dining Plan. We had experienced the food court last year and found it was quite disappointing. We paid cash for lunch on Friday and all I can describe it as was school dinners. I was told that breakfast was great but the evening meals were nothing special at all.
I would certainly recommend
Will there be a next trip?

Next time we will for sure book yet another type of accommodation.. likely to be in the moderate category and a Gold apartment. We weren’t in the Seaside Apartment for long enough to enjoy the balcony I felt and although absolutely lovely we didn’t necessarily need it.
If you want to check out this years YouTube videos you can find them below.. it also includes a brief room tour of the Seaside Apartment too.
